Visiting the Church of the Good Shepherd Respectfully

Norval is a small village on the Credit River, and its churches are part of what gives the place its quiet, settled character. The Church of the Good Shepherd belongs to the Anglican tradition, so visitors from a Catholic parish such as Queen of Peace will find much that is familiar, including a liturgical rhythm shaped by the Christian year, Scripture readings and shared prayer. They will also find differences in practice. Approaching the building as a guest of another Christian community, rather than as a tourist stop, makes for a better visit.

Before you go

• Check current service times directly with the church. Small village congregations often adjust their schedules seasonally or share clergy with neighbouring parishes, so times can change.
• Ask before visiting outside service hours. Many rural churches are not open all day. A quick enquiry will tell you whether the doors are likely to be unlocked.
• Plan parking and transport. Norval's streets are narrow and residential. Park considerately and leave room for neighbours and for any funeral or wedding traffic.

During a service

Guests are generally welcome to sit, listen and pray. Catholics attending an Anglican Eucharist should be aware that the Catholic Church does not ordinarily permit its members to receive communion in other denominations. Coming forward with arms crossed for a blessing, or simply remaining in the pew, is a respectful option. Attending another church's service also does not fulfil the Sunday obligation, so check our Mass times if you plan to visit on a weekend.

Appreciating the building

Historic village churches in Ontario often reflect the materials and building styles of the settlers who built them. Look for memorial windows, plaques naming local families, and the churchyard, which can say a great deal about the village's past. Photography inside is best kept to times when no service or private prayer is taking place. When it is unclear, ask first.
