Finding the Ministry That Fits You
Choosing where to serve can feel like a big step, especially if you are new to the parish or returning to Mass after some time away. A good place to start is with the gifts you already use in daily life. Someone who enjoys reading aloud may feel at home as a lector. A person who likes hospitality might greet people at the doors before Mass. Those who are organised and practical often make the most difference behind the scenes, setting up for events, preparing food drives or helping coordinate schedules.
What to Expect When You Start
Most ministries begin with a simple conversation and, where needed, some basic preparation. Liturgical roles usually involve a short orientation so that readers, servers and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion know the flow of the Mass and feel confident at the altar or ambo. Ministries that involve children, youth or vulnerable adults typically require screening and safe-environment training, in keeping with the policies of the Archdiocese of Toronto. These steps are there to protect everyone and are a normal part of parish life across Ontario.
Serving Without a Large Commitment
Not everyone can give a fixed number of hours each week, and that is perfectly fine. Many parishioners help on a rotating schedule, once a month or only during busy seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Others contribute through prayer, by bringing a dish to a community gathering, or by helping a neighbour get to Mass. Every form of service strengthens the life of a small community like Norval's.
Ministry and the Wider Parish
Ministries are closely connected to the sacramental life of the church. Volunteers often assist families preparing for baptism, first communion or confirmation, and you can read more about these on the Sacraments page. Upcoming volunteer needs, training sessions and outreach collections are usually announced in the weekly bulletin, so it is worth checking it regularly. If you have questions about any role, the parish office is the best first point of contact, and details are available on the Contact page.
