Preparing for Baptism and Marriage: What Families and Couples Can Expect

Every sacrament begins with a conversation. Whether you are expecting a child or planning a wedding, the first step is simply reaching out early so there is time for preparation without pressure. Below is some practical guidance that applies to most Catholic parishes in Ontario, including ours. Specific dates and requirements should always be confirmed with the parish office.

Getting ready for Baptism

Infant baptism is usually arranged a few months ahead. Parents are typically asked to register with the parish and attend a preparation session, which explores the promises they and the godparents will make on the child's behalf. A few points worth knowing:

• Godparents: The Church asks that at least one godparent be a confirmed, practising Catholic who is at least sixteen. A baptised Christian of another denomination may serve as a Christian witness alongside a Catholic godparent.
• Documents: A copy of the child's birth certificate is commonly requested. Godparents from another parish may need a letter of good standing from their own pastor.
• Older children and adults: Those beyond infancy are usually welcomed through a longer journey of formation, often called the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, which may also include Confirmation and First Communion.

Preparing for Marriage

Couples are generally encouraged to contact the parish at least six months to a year before their intended wedding date, and before booking a reception venue, so the church date can be confirmed first. Preparation usually involves meeting with the priest, completing a marriage preparation course and gathering documents such as recently issued baptismal certificates. Where one partner is not Catholic, or either has been married before, additional steps may apply, and the priest can explain these openly and gently.

Preparation is not a hurdle to clear; it is an opportunity to reflect on faith, communication and the life you are building together. Many couples find the conversations surprisingly valuable.
