Settling In: Practical Steps for Your First Months
Joining a new parish is about more than finding a pew on Sunday. A few simple steps in your first weeks can help you feel at home and make it easier for the parish to support you and your family.
Register as a parishioner
Most Catholic parishes in Canada ask new households to complete a registration form. Registering lets the parish office keep you informed, plan for sacramental preparation and, where offered, provide offertory envelopes or tax receipts for donations. You can ask about registration after Mass or by reaching the office through our contact page.
Find a Mass that fits your week
Try attending a couple of different celebrations before settling into a routine. Each Mass tends to have its own character: some are quieter, others have more music or more families with young children. Schedules can change around holy days, Christmas, Easter and the summer months, so it is worth checking the Mass times regularly rather than relying on memory.
Plan ahead for sacraments
If you are hoping to arrange a baptism, prepare a child for First Communion or Confirmation, or begin planning a wedding, contact the parish early. Preparation programs often run on a set calendar and may require registration months in advance. The sacraments page outlines what each one involves and how to begin.
Start small with involvement
You do not need to commit to several ministries at once. Many newcomers begin with one role, such as greeting at the door, helping with hospitality after Mass, singing in the choir or assisting with outreach, and grow from there. Offering your time is one of the quickest ways to put names to faces.
Getting to Norval
Norval is a small community in Halton Hills, and most parishioners arrive by car. Arriving a few minutes early, especially on busy feast days, makes parking and finding a seat easier. If transportation is a challenge, let the parish know; fellow parishioners are often willing to help arrange rides.
Above all, introduce yourself. A brief hello after Mass is often the beginning of lasting friendships in faith.
