Preparing for the Class and the Baptism Day
The class dates listed above belong to early 2024 and have now passed. For current dates, check the latest parish bulletin or reach out through the contact page before making any plans. Class schedules can change around Advent, Lent and the summer months, so it is worth confirming before you set a date with family.
What the class usually covers
Baptism preparation in Catholic parishes generally explains what the sacrament means: welcome into the Church, the washing away of original sin and the start of a life of faith. Parents and godparents learn about the signs used in the rite, such as water, the oil of catechumens, sacred chrism, the white garment and the lit candle. They also learn about the promises they will make on the child's behalf. The class is also a chance to ask practical questions about the ceremony itself.
Choosing godparents
Church law asks that at least one godparent be a confirmed, practising Catholic who is at least sixteen years old and not the child's parent. A baptized Christian of another denomination may sometimes stand as a Christian witness alongside a Catholic godparent. If you are unsure whether someone qualifies, ask the parish office early. Some godparents may need a letter from their own parish confirming they are eligible.
Documents worth gathering
- Your child's birth certificate, or a copy of it
- Full names of parents and godparents as they should appear in the baptismal register
- Any sponsor eligibility letters requested by the parish
On the day
Arrive early so the family can settle and meet the celebrant. Dress the child in comfortable clothing that is easy to open at the chest for the anointing. Bring a white garment or a candle if the parish suggests it. Photography guidelines vary, so ask beforehand. You can find more on the other sacraments of initiation on our Sacraments page.
